About Us

Hobby Honey grew out of a curiousity. I (Garry) and my son (Keelan) took a beginner's beekeeping course in the spring of 2016. We enjoyed it so much that we bought a couple of "nuc's" in the spring of 2017. We've had bees since then and are slowly working up in the size and number of colonies. Like all of life's adventures, we've had our up and downs, but we're starting to understand the bees better now and we're having more success.

Our first honey harvest came in 2019 when we extracted about 80 pounds of a wildflower, medium coloured honey. We quickly sold that to our family, friends and neighbours.

In the spring of 2020, we expanded to a total of 8 hives and launched this website. We hope to be able to provide local honey to our friends and neighbours in the Hillsdale area.

The bees are becoming a fun family hobby. Dad takes care of most of the production and maintenance, while the son and daughter team of Keelan and Hayley take care of the retail, marketing and creative side of the business. Mom is in charge of photography and keeping the 3 of us from taking over the entire house with bee-related stuff. Along the way, the kids are learning all kinds of great lessons (running a small business, handling money, website design, video editing, working with mother nature...)
